About us

The Institute for Molecular Physiology at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf is a leading research institute focusing on the molecular mechanisms underlying plant physiology. The institute comprises seven specialized teams across three locations, each dedicated to distinct areas of plant molecular research:

  • Phloem Development Team: Led by Dr. Seomun Kwon, this team investigates the development of the phloem, aiming to devise strategies to enhance phloem function.
  • Signaling Team: Led by Dr. Michael Wudick, this group studies the complex signaling networks within plants, exploring how cells communicate and respond to various stimuli.
  • Rice Team: Led by Dr. Eliza Loo. Focused on rice as a model organism, this team examines genetic and physiological aspects to improve crop resilience and yield.
  • ERC SYMPORE Team: Led by Dr. Moritz Schladt, this ERC-funded team explores symplastic communication and its implications for plant development and defense mechanisms.
  • Crop Yield in Maize Team:  Led by Dr. Thomas Hartwig, this group aims to understand the factors influencing maize productivity, seeking ways to enhance crop yield.
  • ITbM Team: Collaborating with the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM), this team integrates chemistry and biology to develop innovative molecules that can modulate plant functions. The team is led by Prof. Dr. Masayoshi Nakamura.
  • Root Microbiota Team: This team investigates the interactions between plant roots and their associated microbial communities, aiming to harness beneficial microbes for improved plant health.

The institute is committed to advancing knowledge in plant molecular physiology through cutting-edge research, collaboration, and education. It offers opportunities for students and researchers to engage in innovative projects that address critical challenges in agriculture and environmental sustainability.
